Collegiate Church of San Martino

Places of worship

An imposing place of worship rich in works of art

The Collegiate Church of S. Martino was erected in 1587 on the site of the ancient fortress with sticks, noble rooms, as well as prisons and ancient tunnels. The ancient fortress was razed to the ground in 1563 after the 'War of Siena' and the current collegiate church was built from 1587 to 1595 by Perugian architects. The external style is Mannerist and late-Renaissance, the gabled façade, covered with light plaster with four Tuscan pilasters in red brick, is very reminiscent of the works of the late Renaissance and the entirety of the structure of the church is the result of the reforms of the Council of Trent.

In the center of the façade there is a portal, preceded by a staircase and surmounted by a circular rose window with a stained glass window representing San Martino and below the Medici coat of arms probably hanging from the perimeter walls of the fortress after Sinalunga fell into Florentine hands in 1560.

The façade is crowned by a triangular tympanum in the center of which there is a rectangular window.  Next to the church stands the bell tower, with an octagonal peep, which once again recalls late Renaissance art fifty meters high with openings with round arches. The dome was built in the mid-1700s and is octagonal with small square windows.

The interior of the collegiate church has a Latin cross structure with a single nave and transept covered with a barrel vault. The nave, illuminated exclusively through the two windows on the counter-façade, is flanked by eight chapels, four on each side, inside each of which there is an altar. To the left of the portal, inside a niche, there is the baptismal font, with a carved wooden lid.

The nave is adorned with a series of stucco statues of the Twelve Apostles, part of which are placed on the sides of the triumphal arch and the high altar, the work of Bartolomeo Mazzuoli completed in 1746. At the first altar of the nave there is the altarpiece with St. Catherine of Siena presenting St. Anthony
