Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Nevi

Places of worship

Located in Piazza Garibaldi and built in 1689 on the remains of the ancient walls, the Church of Madonna delle Nevi was built following the architectural styles of the Collegiata di San Martino. For this reason the facade, now of a characteristic light blue color, was initially of an ocher yellow color. The supports of the sides and the gate that encloses the facade are more recent; the gate was in fact added around 1915.

The gable roof is surrounded by brick and on its top there is the stone statue of the "Madonna Miracolosa", which was placed here during the sixties.

The interior of the church, entirely painted of a steel blue, consists of a single nave and has a vaulted ceiling. On the two side walls of the middle nave there are two twin altars in stucco: the one on the right is dedicated to Sant'Antonio di Padova, instead the one on the left is dedicated to San Giuseppe. Each saint is represented by a statue, also in white stucco, placed in a special niche.

On the left wall there is a bas-relief representing the Virgin with the Child and the angels, probably belonging to the Sienese school of the fifteenth century, while inside the tabernacle, on the high altar, there is a painting on wood that represents the Virgin with the Child, probably done by Benvenuto di Giovanni.
