Discovering the art, traditions, and historical sites of Lucca's gastronomy with a local guide

by Gems in Tuscany

Discover the timeless charm of Lucca on a guided walking tour through its historic center, enriched with tastings of local specialties.

The experience takes place every day (except Sunday), starting at 4:00 PM from Piazza San Michele (in front of Unicredit Bank). Here you will explore one of the city’s most iconic squares, once the ancient Roman forum, and admire the beautiful Church of San Michele in Foro, renowned for its striking Pisan Romanesque façade.

The tour continues through the streets of Lucca to discover the birthplace of Giacomo Puccini, one of Italy’s most celebrated opera composers, before reaching Piazza Cittadella, where a statue honors his legacy.

Your first stop is a historic food shop in the city center, where you will enjoy a tasting of cured meats, crostini, bruschetta, and pecorino cheeses, paired with two glasses of local wine from the hills around Lucca (one red and one white).

The walk continues to Piazza Napoleone, once home to Elisa Baciocchi, Princess of Lucca, followed by views of the churches of San Giovanni and San Martino, the city’s cathedral, known for its richly decorated marble façade.

Strolling along Via Fillungo, Lucca’s lively main street, you will experience the local atmosphere among traditional shops and artisan boutiques. A stop in Via Sant’Andrea offers a view of the famous Torre Guinigi, a unique medieval tower topped with a hanging garden.

The tour then reaches San Frediano, where you can admire the church’s remarkable mosaic crowning its Romanesque façade, before enjoying a second tasting stop in a charming historic café. Here you will sample the traditional Buccellato by Taddeucci along with a selection of homemade cookies, accompanied by a glass of Vin Santo or tea, coffee, or cappuccino.

The experience concludes in the stunning Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, an extraordinary oval square built on the remains of a Roman amphitheatre, one of the most unique and recognizable places in Lucca.

The tour ends around 7:00 PM.
